Meet the Youth Advisory Board: Kianni from the Gold Coast

Kianni Hughes is an Administration Officer passionate about youth empowerment and creating positive change in the workforce. Currently completing a traineeship with the Queensland Department of Trade, Employment and Training (DTET), she has developed skills in public speaking, networking, and event coordination through her involvement with the Young DTET Network and the Gold Coast Youth Employment Body (GCYEB for short - an acronym that Kianni says a lot as she is currently co-chairing it!)

What was your first ever job?

I worked as a waitress at an Italian cafe.

How did you go from there to here?

Saying yes to every opportunity and putting myself out there. Plus giving everything a go to see whether it sparks interest.

What’s a tip for someone trying to do what you’re doing?

Put yourself out there and don’t be afraid to be the first person to make the connection.

What do you want to learn next?

I want to learn how to effectively advocate for young people and how I can make my voice and ideas heard and put into action.

Our Youth Advisory Board brings together young people who are invested in their local community and care about improving opportunities for young people from the eight communities in which Community Investment Committees operate. YAB members provide strategic guidance on how the NYEB can work towards its mission, advice on opportunities to strengthen youth voice across the NYEB and on advocacy and policy change.
